Friends of The Yehudi Menuhin School
The Friends of The Yehudi Menuhin School was founded in 1971 by Yehudi Menuhin and two neighbours of the School who saw the need for an association to support the pupils and to raise money which would help to improve and develop the quality of their life at the School. In particular Friends would provide a regular local audience for performances by the pupils. Since its foundation the Friends have been a wonderful support for the pupils. Members follow the musical progress of the pupils as they move up through the School.
The Friends' membership fees go towards supporting our studentsin a variety of ways:
Student Bursaries - students from overseas do not qualify for a UK Department for Education Music & Dance Scheme bursary until they have been resident in the UK for seven terms. This means they have to fund their first two years and a term themselves. The school therefore provides means tested bursaries for these students as there are few who are able to pay the full fee themselves.
Student Aid - this goes towards support unrelated to the school fees. For example students greatly benefit from holiday courses, with specific international instrumental teachers. Students can apply to the school for a contribution towards hte cost. There have also been donations for play equipment such as a TV & DVD player for the common room and sports equipment.
Other Support - In recent years the Friends have raised money to donate the Steinway concert piano and the Vincent Woodstock chanber organ to the school.
The Friends of the Yehudi Menuhin School is a charity which is run by a Management Committee whose members are elected from among the membership.
