Sports
The school is set in eighteen acres of attractive grounds allowing plenty
of scope for relaxation and sport including tennis, badminton, six-a-side
football, aerobics, yoga, cross country running and swimming. Physical exercise
plays an important role in a pupil’s development and all are therefore
expected to take part. We take great care to ensure that physical activities
do not endanger the fingers or arms of the pupils. Table tennis, table football
and pool are popular indoor recreational activities.
Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
In autumn 2003 the school joined the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and
twelve pupils over the age of 14 volunteered to participate. All twelve
have completed the Bronze award and are about to undertake Silver level.
There are four elements to the qualification. First, commitment to a skilled
activity (most, though not all have chosen music). Secondly, a voluntary
sporting activity (a wide variety was chosen). The most difficult section
to undertake in a boarding school is a voluntary activity over a period
of three or six months. All found an activity to complete, either within
or outside school, that would benefit the wider community. Lastly, there
is a camping expedition over two days. Pupils must walk 15 miles, carrying
their own supplies and equipment and spend the night in a tent. We chose
the area of the Surrey Downs, camping on Box Hill. It is hoped that another
Bronze group will be set up in the next year.
Art
To broaden their artistic and creative imagination, all pupils are encouraged
to work in a wide variety of media including painting, printmaking, ceramics,
jewellery and textiles. To support their practical work, pupils study the
work of painters and sculptors and are accompanied on visits to the National
and Tate Galleries in London.
Drama
The Square Room provides a good space for indoor games and also functions
as a dance and drama studio. Regular productions of plays have been
a feature of the school calendar since its inception. Enthusiastic participation
in drama helps the development of platform presentation and is a lively
voluntary activity.
Concert and theatre trips
Regular concert, opera and theatre trips are organised to venues locally
and in London.
Activity and creativity days
Regular outings for the younger pupils include visits to Greenwich, the
'Lookout Discovery Centre' in Bracknell, the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust
Wetland Centre at Barnes and the Imperial War Museum and British Museum
in London. Older pupils are offered a choice of visits to historical sites,
galleries and museums. |
